The Best Thing I Ever Ate

Lately I've been obsessed with "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" on the Food Network. Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, I don't know either way the only channel on at my house is The Food Network. I feel like Bobby Flay is my friend. :) Anyway, back to what my point is here - this show The Best Thing I Ever Ate inspired me to think of all of the best things I ever ate. Now this isn't fancy food rather more comfort food. (And probably illegal in most states...not the healthiest if you know what I'm sayin')

What are the best things you ever ate?

Here are some of mine:

1. Maid Rite in Greenville, OH

(Click here to see a bizarre youtube video of the joint) You really have to eat one to understand what all the fuss is about. Just looking at it you'd think "snooze" but one bite and you are hooked! Seriously I've already had 3 in one sitting. I like mine with mustard, pickles and onions. I think the secret is that they cook the meat in beer and dried worcestershire sauce.

The buns are so warm and soft and melt in your mouth. The mustard, onions and pickles blend together to create such a tart and lovely perfect and crunchy explosion in your mouth. And then you wash it all down with a strawberry milkshake! OMG...I'm craving one so badly right now - too bad I'm about 9-10 hrs from Greenville. :( It's the ultimate hometown comfort food!

2. Mack & Manco Pizza in Ocean City, NJ

My mouth is salivating right now thinking of that gooey mozzarella cheese melting in my mouth and that thin, homemade pizzeria crust with a sauce that is more than perfect. I don't know what they do to their pizza but if I go to Ocean City it's the first place I want to hit up. It's the best pizza on the planet. And it's the best way to end a day at the jersey shore.

3. Maryland Fried Chicken - Bethlehem, PA
If you're going to eat fried chicken the ONLY place to eat it is here besides Ryan's grandma's house. You order the chicken breast "pullies" and you'll get the most perfect piece of all white meat in a tear drop shape. When you are finished picking all the chicken apart, all that is left is one tiny little piece of bone. They trim it so all you get is meat. I don't eat it often but once in a blue moon I get a hankering for some fried chicken and this is where I go. The fries are amazingly delish and perfect too. And the price is ridiculously cheap. The vintage decor drew me into the restaurant the first time and the chicken hooked me. I was blown away by how good it was. If you've ever seen a Maryland Fried Chicken restaurant it looks like it hasn't changed one bit since 1950. So yummie.

4. Billy's Downtown Diner - Bethlehem, PA
I always get the exact same thing every single time...2 egg combo. It's not even on the menu anymore. Billy's menu is very diverse with a greek flare. You can get green eggs and ham if you dare. And his omelets are very fancy with a gourmet and creative twist. But I always get the simple 2 egg combo with homefries and sourdough toast. I get my eggs scrambled, my homefries topped with peppers, onions and mozzarella cheese. And sometimes I get a side of crispy bacon. It's the best diner breakfast ever.

5. White Orchids Thai Cuisine - Saucon Valley, PA
Green Curry. Need I say more? Once I was there with my husband and another couple and the guy said "ewww green curry is the worst curry" How can you eat green curry? He prefers a red or yellow curry. So I told him (and his date) to try a spoonful of my green curry and he was so taken back at how wonderful it was. It has eggplant, bamboo shoots, and other veggies but the curry is so good I could drink it! It has a hint of sweet coconut and it's really spicy but it finishes really smooth. The crunchy bamboo shoots add such a perfect texture and bite. I love it so much. It's so comforting. I know that they are probably other thai restaurants that are better out there but this is my ultimate favorite spot for green curry. I try to order something different but I can't. Everytime I go I ALWAYS get the green curry! I have to. It's so perfect.

6. Pasha's - South Beach (click here to see the menu)
Simit, very common in Turkey, is a circular sesame bread that is served best fresh out of the oven. The first thing you notice is the crunch of the sesame seeds and the inside is this soft, warm and perfect bread. It tastes at it's best dipped in muhammara, a tangy walnut spread. I've had muhammara around here in Bethlehem but it's just not the same. And I don't usually like walnuts but this is blended with garlic, roasted red peppers, lemon juice, cumin, aleppo pepper, tomato paste, pomegranate, extra virgin olive oil and some other special spices and ingredients that I probably don't know about. Uh...it's so sweet, spicy, tangy and it's bursting with flavor. And the restaurant Pasha is so pretty on Lincoln ave in South Beach. I love South Beach. It's the ultimate south beach cuisine!!!! YUM!!! Un-believable and the combination of the warm sesame bread in the tangy muhammara is just too much to take. It's perfection. I could eat just that as a meal.
Simit dipped in muhammara
Okay this is probably the healthiest thing on my list...

7. Vegetarian Dim Sum House - Chinatown, NYC

Fried Dough Balls wrapped in Rice paper w/ a garlic soy sauce

Comfort, comfort, comfort...so soft and the garlic soy sauce is so delicious. The soft steamed rice paper wrapped the fried dough ball and it's like a symphony of textures in your mouth. You're not sure what's going on because the steamed dough on the outside is soft and wet and then the inside is dry and has a slight crunch and then the salty garlic sauce kicks in and you're just like ahhhhhh this is so sinfully delish!

8. Nuts About Ice Cream - Bethlehem, PA

Saffron Pistachio Ice Cream

It's the best. I've never seen this flavor anywhere else and it's perfection. It's fresh and homemade by the sweetest couple from India. You are treated like family when you visit. The flavor is hard to describe but it is sweet and aromatic and the pistachios are to die for. Best ice cream ever.

.........

Well I'm getting hungry so I think I'm going to cut this post here. I am probably forgetting something but this gives you an idea of some of my favorite foods at some of my favorite places! :) This was fun to write and think about. The show the Best Thing I Ever Ate inspired me. You should check out that show if you haven't already. It's so interesting to hear what different famous chef's love to eat, especially when it is their favorite comfort food.
